  • 1 guaranteed day per week (Saturdays, 11:00am–6:00pm during public opening hours) 8 hours
  • 25 additional guaranteed paid days for exhibition installation and special events (across Monday–Friday, 10:00am–6:00pm) 8 hours

Cell Project Space is seeking a motivated and enthusiastic Gallery Assistant to join our team. This is an exciting opportunity for someone at the beginning of their career who is passionate about contemporary art and eager to gain practical experience across all aspects of gallery operations.The role combines front-of-house responsibilities with hands-on exhibition installation and administrative support, offering valuable experience working within a small, dynamic artist-led organisation. It would suit someone who enjoys working across multiple disciplines and is keen to develop a broad range of professional skills in exhibition production, communications, visitor engagement, and gallery operations.
 
Essential Attributes
 
An excellent knowledge of contemporary art and educated to degree level. Both academic and practice-based applicants will be considered. A minimum of one year's experience working within a gallery, visual arts or media arts organisation, or a professional artist's studio is essential. Candidates must have a good working knowledge of Microsoft Office, Adobe Creative Suite, and cloud-based systems such as Dropbox and Google Workspace. 
We are looking for someone with a flexible approach who is available to work additional paid hours during busy installation periods and major events.
 
Applicants should be able to demonstrate experience or proficiency in at least one of the following areas:
 
  • Communications and digital design
  • Basic audio-visual presentation and equipment
  • Writing and exhibition interpretation
  • Gallery maintenance, exhibition care, and general DIY
 
Key Responsibilities
 
The primary purpose of the Gallery Assistant role is to support the delivery of Cell Project Space's exhibitions and public programme.
The role has two principal areas of responsibility:
 
  • Working closely with the Cell Project Space team to provide practical support during exhibition installation, including preparing gallery spaces, assisting artists, and helping ensure exhibitions are delivered to a high professional standard.
  • Providing an excellent visitor experience during public opening hours by maintaining a welcoming and professional front-of-house presence, engaging confidently with visitors, and responding to enquiries from the public.
 
The role requires excellent organisational skills, strong self-management, practical problem-solving abilities, and a willingness to work collaboratively with artists, curators, and colleagues.
Alongside installation and visitor-facing duties, you will also provide administrative support to the curatorial team. Responsibilities include updating the Cell Project Space website, responding to information requests from media and the public, assisting with exhibition production schedules and timelines, and supporting the day-to-day administration of the gallery. The successful candidate will be able to manage multiple tasks simultaneously, work to deadlines, and maintain a high level of accuracy and attention to detail.
