'A Finely Tuned Battery of Senses' Workshop documentation
On Monday 20th April the gallery hosted 'A Finely Tuned Battery of Senses', a workshop planned by Goldsmiths Alumni and facilitators of Art Writing Group, Oli Mardon and Frank Wates. The workshop invited members of Art Writing Group (previously, Goldsmiths Art Writing Group) to respond to the current exhibition by LA Timpa, Come Back.

Before the workshop, participants were asked to gather found images they felt could contribute to an imagined project. Inspired by Timpa’s writing, they were then invited, upon arrival, to document their journey to the gallery with a focus on sensory detail.

From this writing, booklets were crafted and took shape. Recalling the exhibition as though describing a memory, participants composed fragments—descriptions, narratives—and created drawings from the sounds in the room. Lingering on the notion of “composition” and the texture of their surroundings, they wove their collected images into the gaps between text and drawing, guided by Timpa’s methods.

Playing with Timpa’s material language, and his interplay of sound akin to a sonic fossil, the group posed the question; what does sound look like as space and space as sound? Finally, the narratives and writings produced in the workshop were rewritten from the perspective of a city animal. The fox, an scavenger, is said to carry a finely tuned battery of senses.

The workshop will continue to develop into the group’s first publication, documenting writing and image experimentation inspired by LA Timpa’s 2025 novella A Destiny in Jeopardy – launch date to be announced in May.
